50% Reservation in Agriculture Universities for Students from Farm Families The State Cabinate of Karnataka Announced

The State Cabinet’s decided to extend reservation for students hailing from the families of farmers and agricultural labourers in admissions to B.Sc. course in Agriculture, from 40% to 50%, the amount of seats for these category students in agricultural universities has increased from 983 to 1,230.

The total intake of seats in agricultural universities of Bengaluru, Raichur, Dharwad, and Shivamogga, and Horticultural University in Bagalkot and Karntaka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Science University in Bidar is 2,460.

The number of seats reserved for students hailing from agricultural families and farm labourers’ families within the University of Agriculture, Bengaluru, are going to be 380, University of Agriculture, Raichur –136, University of Agriculture, Dharwad, – 235, University of Agriculture, Shivamogga – 158, and Horticultural University, Bagalkot, – 158, and Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Science University, Bidar, – 163, consistent with a handout.

Most of the modern Agriculture Practices are turning out to be knowledge based and to gain expertise in them is not easy for the rural farmers.

Importance of Formal Agriculture Studies: 

These days with the entry of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) within the sector, many MNCs have forayed into the segment with dozens of agro-products; subsequently this has resulted as a threat to Indian farmers who lack professional expertise to raised affect the difficulty . Hence the necessity of the hour is to offer agricultural education a high priority.

Briefing press persons on the choices taken at a cabinet meeting, Minister for home and Parliamentary Affairs, Basavaraj Bommai said children and agricultural families would benefit from the choice to hike the reservation in admission to agriculture colleges, universities, and every one allied institutions within the state.

 The various topics that the farmers must be made aware about are: 

  • Education of the role of private investment

  • Education and awareness on credit facilities to farmers

  • Education on water use resources

  • Education on strong marketing infrastructure

  • Education on the role of effective Agro-processing techniques

  • Education on flood and drought management
